Matthews Covered Bridge Festival

Indiana has a few treasured covered bridges left from days past.

A covered bridge is exactly what is sounds like: a bridge that is "covered" with a protective shelter. At the time that Indiana was becoming developed and industrialized (early 1800s), bridges were all made from wood. An uncovered bridge would become bad, and therefore dangerous, from exposure to rain, snow, winds, etc. An uncovered bridge would become dangerous in as little as 5 - 15 years. But a covered bridge would last much longer. Those that are still surviving today (preserved, not used) are a treasure.

Originally it was estimated that Indiana had over 400 covered bridges! 

Now there are only about 90 of them. And one of those 90+ is right here in our own backyard!

This weekend the Matthews Covered Bridge Festival gives you a look into the past with an opportunity to see the covered bridge (just 20 minutes north of Muncie) and to experience real "Hoosier" culture.

There will be live music, vendors selling crafts, antiques, food, etc. and games for kids and adults alike.

Labor Day Weekend - Acres of Treasures

New Castle, Indiana, is about a 25 minute drive from the Ball State campus. It's a small town with a big heart and a great place to experience real Hoosier culture. This weekend, there is a festival on the corner of County Road 850 East and 200 South.

According to The Starpress, there are more than 400 booths at the event. You can also enjoy free kids' activities, live music, and good old-fashioned Indiana fresh produce to eat.

The cost is $4.00 to get in. The festival runs from today through Monday.

Labor Day Weekend - Academy of Aeronautics

One of Muncie's little-known treasures is the Academy of Aeronautics. Located on East Memorial Drive, this museum includes a history or aeronautics, hands-on, interactive exhibits, and more.

This weekend, they are hosting the "Flying, a Flick and Fun" event. You can watch model flying in the morning,

a military air show on Friday afternoon (12:30) 

or skydivers 

on Saturday (12:30), more model flying in the afternoon on both days, and then something special each evening:

Friday - hot air balloons and Chinese Lantern Launch; 

Saturday: Flyboys movie and free popcorn.
